How to read a certificate of analysis

A certificate of analysis (COA) is a batch-specific record, not a substitute for a laboratory’s own qualification process. On receipt, match the product identifier and lot number on the vial or package to the document before filing it with the receiving record.

What to review

Confirm the issuing laboratory, report date, sample or lot identifier, stated analytical method, and reported result. Review whether the stated identity and purity observations are appropriate for the material and the research workflow. Record any discrepancy and isolate material according to your laboratory procedures.

Maintain traceability

Store the COA with purchase documentation, receiving date, storage location, and internal inventory identifier. Documentation supports controlled laboratory use; it does not establish suitability for any clinical, diagnostic, human, or veterinary purpose.
